About

Me

I’m Alexander Sylte (b. 1976), a Norwegian artist and photographer based in Oslo. My creative practice and studio are centered around the intersection of fashion, art, and portraiture. I do commissioned work across campaigns, editorials, content, artwork, and portraits.

In addition to my commissioned projects, I am actively involved in private projects and editorial work, constantly exploring new ideas and concepts through test shoots. This allows me to collaborate with a diverse range of talents, curate high-quality teams, and cultivate a space where all my creative visions converge.

With a wealth of experience spanning over several decades in the creative industry, encompassing everything from culture and music to fashion and advertising, I took a significant leap in 2018 by building my own studio from scratch. Photography has always been a central tool in my artistic arsenal, with previous engagements including weekly shoots, various editorial work over decades, working with local fashion designers in Oslo, and personal photo projects. Now, owning my own studio has allowed me to fully realize my creative ambitions and use the next decade on developing my pratice.

My journey in photography began in the 1990s, where I immersed myself in the fundamental aspects of this art form as a student. I honed my skills by working with film and developing techniques in the darkroom. Later, I expanded my knowledge and refined my creative eye at Bilder Nordic School of Photography, exploring digital workflows, studio practices, lighting techniques, and furthering my understanding of the craft.

Before establishing my studio, I accumulated a wealth of experience in various roles such as Creative Director, Head of Digital, Editor-in-Chief, Art Director, Designer, Photographer, and Creative Producer. Throughout my career, I have managed design studios and magazines, developed visual identities and brand strategies, and executed a diverse range of creative productions. Additionally, I have been involved in fashion events and curated photo exhibitions.

My current aspiration is to further develop my artistic practice and studio by collaborating with inspiring individuals, talented professionals, and renowned brands, in order to deliver meaningful and artistic contributions to the world.

SINCE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR, HERE ARE SOME FUN PERSONAL FACTS. I started collecting records at the age of 10 and got my first weekly DJ residency at a youth club when I was 13. I was skateboarding before it was legalized in Norway in 1989 and used to create graffiti and draw letters (I'm still obsessed with typography). I got my first job at a sports shop when I was 12 and was a BMX champion for three consecutive years in my teens. I started my first business at the age of 15 and had my own sponsored skateboard team. At 15, I was DJing at clubs where I was eight years too young to enter and hosted my own radio show called Radio Fusion. For five years, I worked as a DJ and radio host, presenting music shows, talk shows, and news, and I also served as the Head of Music at the radio station. I used to work in a specialized record shop for DJs and had aspirations of becoming a ninja, but settled for karate instead. Later on, I joined the Norwegian Armed Forces.

In the 90s, I used to mix music for fashion and dance shows and had my first images and stories published in '97. I have been a touring DJ for over 20 years and released a mix CD in 2007. I have performed as a DJ in Norway, the US, UK, Europe, and Africa. I enjoy indulging in design, typography, interior, and architecture. Pizza is my guilty pleasure, and I make several in the studio every week. I am passionate about collecting vinyl, books, images, and other items. I still have my Technics 1210 MKII DJ turntables from '93, which are now spinning records in my studio. When I get old, my goal is to live in the countryside and become a hobby architect and gardener. NOTE: I have a genuine appreciation for artists, designers, makers, and creators who follow their passion, strive to be their best, and contribute to creating a better, brighter, and more beautiful world.
